Cultural oasis in the wilderness

About Umea

As the 2014 European Capital of Culture, Sweden’s fastest-growing town is bound for further expansion. Sport features heavily on Umeå's agenda. This town is a leading centre for floorball, somewhat like indoor hockey, and offers an abundance of cycle paths. It is also home to the legendary elite ice hockey club Björklöven. IKSU Sport, one of Scandinavia’s biggest indoor centres, has a golf simulator and even indoor beach volleyball.

Holman Island, where you find Umeå, is Sweden’s sunniest place – far out at sea just 36 kilometres from Finland.

Nearly a third of the city’s population are students, many with a creative bent that influences a lively music tradition. Niche music festivals year-round encompass jazz, opera and the black-clad metal hordes. Six of Umeå’s restaurants have bagged slots in Sweden’s renowned White Guide, drawing on a rich regional larder heavy with reindeer, elk, Arctic char, bleak roe, berries and almond potatoes.

The average age of Umeå's citizens is just 38 years.
